Design and implementation of technologies and operations for Jumbo Supermarkten’s new ecommerce channel.

With the Dutch online grocery market expected to triple in the coming years, Jumbo Supermarkten, the second largest grocery retailer in The Netherlands, wanted to offer its customers online grocery shopping for the first time.


Jumbo Supermarkten engaged Javelin Group to define, design and implement the operations and technologies for a new ecommerce grocery channel. These included an ecommerce website, an ecommerce fulfilment centre (dark store), in-store pick-up, dedicated pick-up points, and customer services.


Having defined the operational elements (including process design of the dark store and selection of the warehouse management system) and the technology elements of the new ecommerce channel, Javelin Group implemented the key systems including:

  • An innovative ecommerce website with click & collect, built on the Intershop platform
  • A product information management (PIM) system using Informatica
  • A bespoke order management system (OMS), which also includes pick-up and delivery slot management
  • In-store and pick-up point functionality replacing the need for a POS system
  • Customer service functionality on both Intershop and OMS


As a result of the new website and operations, customers can now order online for next-day pick-up from dedicated pick-up points and selected Jumbo Supermarkten stores.

In only 22 months, Jumbo Supermarkten was transformed from a retailer with no ecommerce offering and no method of supporting this, to a retailer with a brand new, world-class ecommerce website platform and fulfilment centre, all delivered on time and on budget, and at an affordable price.

Following hot on the heels of two other successful development projects for de Bijenkorf and WE Fashion, this is Javelin Group’s third outstanding ecommerce project delivered for a leading Dutch retailer, in recent months.

At Jumbo Supermarkten we aim to offer our customers the best service, the largest range and the lowest prices, and we are now delighted to be able to extend our unique formula to our customers via online shopping. With The Netherlands’ online grocery market expected to triple in the coming years, we embarked on this project with Javelin Group almost two years ago to meet the current and future needs of our customers.
