Why did you choose to apply for Javelin Group?

Javelin really attracted me because of the high profile clients they work with thanks to their leadership in the retail sector. I think that working with leading global retailers is one of the best ways to expand my knowledge of the sector. Furthermore, work culture and work-life balance is very important to me, and speaking to others at Javelin before joining I felt how friendly and fun the team is.

What is the interview process like?

The application process is thorough, and accurately covers many aspects of the actual job such as market sizing and analysis, presentation skills, retail news and commercial acumen. This gives candidates the perfect opportunity to see if it’s the right career for them, whilst meeting many different people from across the company lets candidates learn about types of projects and day-to-day responsibilities.

Describe a typical day as an Associate Consultant

I typically start just before 9am and deal with any high priority requests before joining our project’s daily video call to agree on actions for the day. As I’m on a commercial due diligence project for a UK grocery retailer, I’ll spend the morning researching competitors in rapid grocery delivery, learning about their proposition, operational set-up and expansion plans.

Lunchtime: If I’m in the office I’ll see who’s around for a bite to eat – we’ll go for a walk to the local street food market, or if at home I’ll go out for a run (most likely a walk…)

When I’m back, I’ll work my findings from the morning into a few clear slides showing the current state of the market and comparison of competitors’ offering. Later in the afternoon I may have a group call with the Charity Committee to plan our next fundraiser, or I’ll spend some time reaching out to my network to find a retail expert to present to our team for our ‘Lunch & Learn’ series.

Before I sign off for the day, I’ll send an email to my manager detailing what I’ve completed and what’s left to do, before closing my laptop around 6-6:30pm for the evening. Time for a swim before seeing friends for dinner.

What are the best aspects of your job?

• Variety – As our projects range from 4-12 weeks, I’m always learning and don’t get bored.
• Professional opportunities – Perform well and you’ll quickly be given extra responsibility. Consulting at Javelin is quite special in offering employees presenting opportunities to C-suite leaders after only 4 years.
• Travel – Personally I’ve really liked the opportunity to work abroad. Though this has obviously stopped since Covid, I’m looking forward to it returning in the near future.
