eCommerce Operations Consultant

The ecommerce operations consultant will work with Javelin Group clients to develop fulfilment, delivery, supply chain and contact centre strategies and support the implementation of recommendations as required. Using their in-depth experience of ecommerce operations experience and systems knowledge they will provide expert input into systems design, process improvement, implementation and commercial due diligence.

Typical projects are 1-3 months in duration, with a combination of on-site and office-based work. Some travel will be required, and some work away from home. The work is typically done in 2–5 person teams.

Education

Degree at 2.1 level and above. Candidates with a good academic background will be considered if they can demonstrate relevant industry experience.

Work Experience

  • Experience of ecommerce operations for a retailer, a service provider, or as a consultant
  • Successful project delivery experience
  • Experience of process mapping, research and analysis
  • Experience of report/presentation preparation and delivery

Retail Technology Consultant

Working closely alongside highly experienced Javelin Group technology consultants you will be part of a team delivering assignments with leading retail and brand clients, advising them on technology strategy and technology package selection in support of achieving their business and IT objectives. The role will involve gathering, analysing and presenting information on business requirements, processes, application functionality, cost and the impacts of these on organisation and existing technology.  The consultant will normally work as part of a 2 to 3 person team, under leadership of a technology consulting manager or director. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Understanding a client’s business, its ambitions, drivers, processes and constraints and gather information about its current portfolio and IT applications and systems.
  • Using a mix of market-leading tools and techniques developed by Javelin Group and unique approaches tailored to the assignment, you will help the client choose the optimum technology solutions and design the implementation programmes required to deliver the change.
  • Developing PowerPoint reports and present the contents to a senior audience of IT and business professionals within the client up to director level.
  • While most of your time will be spent discussing and analysing major applications, and you will also be required to describe, underlying infrastructure and other IT terms such as: outsourcing, data centre, requirements capture, as-is and to-be architecture, PCI-DSS, ERP, SOA, RDBMS, ITIL, ESB, HTTP, LAMP, Java, agile, waterfall.

Projects are typically 1 to 6 months in duration with a combination of on-site and office-based work. Travel to client sites is an important aspect of the work and you should expect to be staying away from home approximately 1 to 2 nights a week and occasionally more intensively than that.

Education

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a numerate subject or subject requiring the analysis of a significant quantity of data and the drawing of conclusions.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience of working in an application development or systems integration role within an enterprise IT department, ideally in a retailer. Alternatively you may be working between business departments and the IT department to provide specifications, direction and management of systems changes required
  • Experience of business technology and how it impacts on a company’s ability to operate and a solid understanding of the core components of an enterprise’s technology portfolio
  • Able to describe major trends in ecommerce and participate in a discussion of how they impact large retailers
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build good client relationships
  • Engaging, confident, articulate and literate. Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Professional at all times in personal appearance, language and manner
  • Quick thinking with high attention to detail in both written and numeric work
  • Ability to learn new concepts and apply them
  • Strong desire to work in retail consulting
  • Confident user of Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Fluency in another European language
  • Understanding of retail applications and retail business processes
  • Understanding of ecommerce technology and business processes

Business Analyst

The eCommerce Business Analyst works with client stakeholders and related third parties to analyse, design and document eCommerce solutions to meet the client’s objectives. The business analyst acts as the ‘voice’ of the client in all internal stakeholder project meetings and is a key member of a professional team delivering advanced eCommerce solutions to market leading retail companies. The role is highly client facing and covers the full project lifecycle from the elicitation of business requirements through to user acceptance testing and go-live of the system/s. The key objective of the business analyst is to lead the requirement elicitation process and to deliver a functional design specification that meets the client objectives for the project. You will be required to:

  • Analyse and understand project scope and core objectives
  • Lead requirements elicitation workshops with client stakeholders to define high level business requirements
  • Gather and organize requirements into functional areas and help the client to prioritise the requirements
  • Prepare the functional design workshop plan and agendas for each workshop
  • Lead functional design workshops with client stakeholders and technical architect to elicit detailed, low level functional requirements
  • Critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, break down high-level information into their constituent details, abstract up from low-level information to a general understanding, and distinguish user requests from the underlying true business needs.
  • Collaborate with technical architect, lead developer and subject matter experts to establish the technical vision and analyse tradeoffs between usability and performance needs
  • Proactively communicate and collaborate with both internal project team members and external client stakeholders to analyse information needs and functional requirements and deliver the following artefacts as needed: Functional design specification, Wireframes (screen blueprint that represents the skeletal framework of a website), Workflow / business process flow diagrams, Data Model/s
  • Obtain sign-off from client on the specifications
  • In conjunction with the technical architect, plan and present the construction phase kick-off meeting introducing the development team and other internal stakeholders to the project ensuring the team understand the project scope, core objectives and key functional requirements.
  • Be proactive in ensuring that the development and QA teams understand the requirements by attending daily team meetings and initiating functional clarification sessions where needed.
  • Be the liaison between the business, the development team and the support team.
  • Review the test plan and test scripts to ensure quality and coverage of the testing
  • Provide training material and run training sessions for business users when necessary.

Education

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years working experience as a Technical Business Analyst
  • Experience in successfully leading requirement elicitation workshops is essential
  • Candidate must be comfortable in challenging customer requirements in order to truly understand the underlying needs of the business and arrive at the best possible solution for the client.
  • Demonstrable experience in writing requirements specifications for Retail Information Systems. This includes producing the following: High level business requirements document, Detailed functional design document, Workflow / business process flow diagrams
  • A proven track record in Software Development and end to end experience of the project lifecycle
  • Candidate must be an exceptionally clear communicator including facilitation, presentation and written skills and must have the ability to be pragmatic and drive strong scope management disciplines.
  • Experience of testing the developed solution to ensure it meets requirements and client expectations.

  • Interviewing and listening skills, to talk with individuals and groups about their needs, ask the right questions to surface essential requirements, and confirm your understanding of what project stakeholders’ say/mean.
  • Facilitation skills, to lead requirements elicitation workshops, work with stakeholders to define acceptance criteria, moderate brainstorming sessions, etc.

  • Analytical skills, to critically evaluate data gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicting requirements, break down high-level information into their constituent details, abstract from particular examples to a more general understanding, identify underlying needs from explicit user requests, etc.
  • Writing skills, to communicate information effectively and consistently to different types of audiences, including senior management and technical development staff.
  • Organisational and time management skills, to cope with the vast array of information gathered during elicitation and analysis, manage time effectively.
  • Teamwork skills, to share responsibilities, confer with others, help others do their jobs, and seek help when needed.
  • Relationship-building skills, to develop a large, well-diversified network of valuable connections across the organisation.
  • Negotiating skills, to get consensus about priorities, help resolve conflicts among project stakeholders.
  • Modelling skills, to represent requirements information in graphical forms e.g. business process flow diagrams

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Management skills, to help implement and/or improve requirements processes and practices and to define, for a given initiative, the tasks to be performed, the techniques to be used, and the deliverables to be produced.
  • eCommerce experience or experience in any of the following: User experience and UI design (wireframing), Website usability and accessibility, Search and navigation, Merchandising and promotions, Checkout process, SEO, Web analytics.
  • Exposure to the software testing process including the preparation of test plans and execution of test scripts is an advantage
