Senior Strategy Consultant

The senior strategy consultant works within the strategy team advising our retail clients on business strategy, with a focus on ecommerce and multi-channel strategy, as well as evaluating retail businesses for our investor clients on due diligence engagements. The consultant works directly with clients, participating across all areas of the project, whilst being responsible for leading selected workstreams. Responsibilities include setting objectives, developing hypotheses, determining appropriate analysis techniques and frameworks, as well as presenting recommendations to client teams.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a project team, reporting to a Javelin Group strategy manager or director.
  • Lead or play an instrumental role in project management, including client engagement, internal team management and project work output.
  • Develop workstream methodology including gathering data, development of hypotheses and determining appropriate analysis techniques.
  • Work independently or manage a consultant(s) to source and integrate sets of data, complete analysis, draw conclusions and develop strategic recommendations.
  • Review consultants' output, providing feedback and support.
  • Showcase and summarise analysis and recommendations in PowerPoint and play an active role in presenting to client stakeholders.
  • Contribute to project proposals and Javelin Group's thought leadership development.
  • Mentor junior consultants and organise regular catch-up sessions.

Essential Experience and Knowledge

  • Strong and demonstrated interest in retail strategy consulting.
  • Proven track record of delivering high quality, successful projects within scope and budget.
  • Strong analytical and diagnostic skills, as well as the ability to develop conclusions from analysis.
  • Ability to develop appropriate financial analysis tools e.g. P&L modelling, financial assessment, company benchmarking etc.
  • Proactively manage project risks and issues, assess alternatives and recommend solutions.

  • Previous experience of working in matrixed teams.

eCommerce Operations Consultant

The ecommerce operations consultant works with Javelin Group clients to develop fulfilment, delivery, supply chain and contact centre strategies and support the implementation of recommendations as required. Using in-depth experience and knowledge of ecommerce operations and systems, the consultant provides expert input into systems design, process improvement, implementation and commercial due diligence.

Typical projects are 1 to 3 months in duration, with a combination of on-site and office-based work. Some travel will be required, and some work away from home. The work is typically done in 2 to 5 person teams.

Education

Degree at 2:1 level and above. Candidates with a good academic background will be considered if they can demonstrate relevant industry experience.

Work Experience

  • Experience of ecommerce operations for a retailer, a service provider, or as a consultant.
  • Successful project delivery experience.
  • Experience of process mapping, research and analysis.
  • Experience of report/presentation preparation and delivery.

Application Architect/Senior

The application architect is responsible for the overall technical design of the solution and for making all technical decisions within the project. The application architect works alongside business analysts, who write and deliver the functional specification, a project manager, who organises the team and ensures that projects are delivered to time and budget, and a development team. This is a highly technical role with a strong client-facing focus, providing the leadership and technical competence to deliver excellent client solutions. While there is likely to be limited, if any, hands on development, exceptional knowledge of software development practices is required in order to make sure the optimal solution is designed and that the developers work to the highest quality.

Duties and Responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities of the application architect role are as follows:

  • Work as part of a project team, reporting to a Javelin Group project manager to define and document the application architecture for a variety of software development projects, including ecommerce website builds, order management systems, product information management (PIM) systems and other ecommerce-related software builds.
  • Work closely with client technical staff to ensure solutions adhere to client standards and fit their strategic enterprise architecture.
  • Definition and management of non-functional requirements, including working with others to ensure these requirements have been met.
  • Definition and organisation of development tasks and accurate estimation of these tasks.
  • Work closely with members of the development team to ensure that the software design and implementation meets the architectural goals and quality standards.
  • Provide support to the business analysts, and other project team members, during functional requirements definition to ensure that functionality is both technically achievable and feasible within the project constraints.
  • Identification and ownership of technical project risks and issues, including owning mitigation activities and resolution of issues.
  • Undertake other duties as directed by line managers commensurate with the post.

Additionally, at the senior level, the duties and responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out the above duties on more complex projects, often involving multiple disparate technologies and/or integration with many third party systems.
  • Actively seeking opportunities to contribute improvements to Javelin Group's application delivery process.
  • Mentoring junior members of the architecture team and members of the development team.
  • Acting as a focal point of expertise (both within Javelin Group and amongst our clients) on key technologies or skills.
  • Reviewing and/or defining enterprise architectures.

Essential Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience of the full software development lifecycle, delivering web-based systems in a Java based environment over multiple complex implementations.
  • Experience of architecting software solutions with demanding non-functional requirements such as performance, high availability, reliability, security, etc.
  • Extensive previous Java development experience.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of Java open source projects and components.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of object oriented design techniques and patterns.
  • Knowledge of several standard software development methodologies.
  • Knowledge of integration patterns and technologies (for example, Websphere MQ, Mule or other ESBs).
  • Client interaction experience, including experience of running workshops with clients.

Desirable Experience and Knowledge

  • Retail or ecommerce experience.
  • Experience of at least one major ecommerce platform (e.g. ATG, IBM Websphere Commerce, hybris, Demandware).
  • Expertise in search/navigation and merchandising solutions (e.g. Endeca, Fredhopper, Omniture Merchandising/Mercado).

Business Analyst

The ecommerce business analyst works with client stakeholders and related third parties to analyse, design and document ecommerce solutions to meet the client’s objectives. The business analyst acts as the ‘voice’ of the client in all internal stakeholder project meetings, and is a key member of a professional team delivering advanced ecommerce solutions to market leading retail companies.

The role is highly client facing and covers the full project lifecycle, from the elicitation of business requirements through to user acceptance testing and go-live of the system/s. The key objective of the business analyst is to lead the requirements elicitation process and to deliver a functional design specification that meets the client objectives for the project.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyse and understand project scope and core objectives.
  • Lead requirements' elicitation workshops with client stakeholders to define high level business requirements.
  • Gather and organise requirements into functional areas and help the client to prioritise the requirements.
  • Prepare the functional design workshop plan and agendas for each workshop.
  • Lead functional design workshops, with client stakeholders and technical architects, to elicit detailed, low level functional requirements.
  • Critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, break down high-level information into their constituent details, abstract up from low-level information to a general understanding, and distinguish user requests from the underlying true business needs.
  • Collaborate with technical architects, lead developers and subject matter experts to establish the technical vision, and analyse tradeoffs between usability and performance needs.
  • Proactively communicate and collaborate with both internal project team members and external client stakeholders to analyse information needs and functional requirements, and deliver the following artefacts as needed:
    • Functional design specification
    • Wireframes (screen blueprint that represents the skeletal framework of a website)
    • Workflow/business process flow diagrams
    • Data Model/s
  • Obtain sign-off from client on the specifications.
  • In conjunction with the technical architect, plan and present the construction phase kick-off meeting, introducing the development team and other internal stakeholders to the project, ensuring the team understand the project scope, core objectives and key functional requirements.
  • Be proactive in ensuring that the development and QA teams understand the requirements by attending daily team meetings and initiating functional clarification sessions where needed.
  • Be the liaison between the business, the development team and the support team.
  • Review the test plan and test scripts to ensure quality and coverage of the testing.
  • Provide training material and run training sessions for business users when necessary.

Essential Experience and Knowledge

  • Minimum of three years working experience as a technical business analyst.
  • Experience in successfully leading requirement elicitation workshops.
  • The candidate must be comfortable in challenging customer requirements in order to truly understand the underlying needs of the business, arriving at the best possible solution for the client.
  • Demonstrable experience in writing requirements specifications for retail information systems. This includes producing the following:
    • High level business requirements document
    • Detailed functional design document
    • Workflow/business process flow diagrams
  • A proven track record in software development and end to end experience of the project lifecycle.
  • The candidate must be an exceptionally clear communicator including facilitation, presentation and written skills, and must have the ability to be pragmatic and drive strong scope management disciplines.
  • Experience of testing the developed solution to ensure it meets requirements and client expectations.

Desirable Experience and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of ecommerce best practice.

  • Organisational and time management skills: The candidate must be able to cope with the vast array of information gathered during elicitation and analysis and manage time effectively.
  • Teamwork skills: The candidate must be able to share responsibilities, confer with others, help others do their jobs, and seek help when needed.
  • Relationship-building skills: The candidate must be able to develop a large, well-diversified network of valuable connections across the organisation.
  • Negotiating skills: The candidate must be able to get consensus about priorities, and help resolve conflicts among project stakeholders.
  • Modelling skills: The candidate must be able to represent requirements information in graphical forms e.g. business process flow diagrams.

  • Requirements management skills: It would be an advantage if the candidate could help implement and/or improve requirements processes and practices and to define, for a given initiative, the tasks to be performed, the techniques to be used, and the deliverables to be produced.

Retail Technology Consultant

Working closely alongside highly experienced Javelin Group technology consultants, the retail technology consultant is part of a team delivering assignments with leading retailers and consumer brands and advising them on technology strategy and technology package selection in support of achieving their business and IT objectives. The role involves gathering, analysing and presenting information on business requirements, processes, application functionality, cost and the impacts of these on organisation and existing technology. The consultant will normally work as part of a 2 to 3 person team, under leadership of a technology consulting manager or director. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Understanding a client’s business, its ambitions, drivers, processes and constraints and gathering information about its current business performance, business strategy, application portfolio and IT systems.
  • Using a mix of market-leading tools and techniques developed by Javelin Group and unique approaches tailored to the assignment, you will help the client choose the optimum technology solutions and design the implementation programmes required to deliver the change.
  • Developing PowerPoint reports and presenting the contents to a senior audience of IT and business professionals within the client up to board level.
  • While most of your time will be spent discussing and analysing major retail application packages and their potential impact on a client’s business, you will also be required to describe underlying infrastructure and other IT terms including arrangements for hosting, IT organisation structure, implementation project teams and application support.

Projects are typically 1 to 6 months in duration with a combination of on-site and office-based work. Travel to client sites is an important aspect of the work and you should expect to be staying away from home approximately 1 to 2 nights a week and occasionally more intensively than that.

Education

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a numerate subject or subject requiring the analysis of a significant quantity of data and the drawing of conclusions.

  • Strong ecommerce technology knowledge and skills.
  • Previous experience of working in an application development, systems integration, business analysis or project manager role within an enterprise IT department, ideally in a retailer. Alternatively you may be working between business departments and the IT department to provide specifications, direction and management of systems changes required.
  • Experience of business technology and how it impacts on a company’s ability to operate and a solid understanding of the core components of an enterprise’s technology portfolio.
  • Ablility to describe major trends in ecommerce and participate in a discussion of how they impact large retailers.

Java Senior Developer

The Java senior developer role works on a range of engineering projects under the guidance of a Lead Developer or Technical Architect. You will be part of a team responsible for the development and delivery of technical solutions based on client requirements.

As a Senior Developer, you will be responsible for creating complex enterprise ecommerce and other multi-channel retail solutions as a member of high energy and collaborative team.
