We are Europe's leading specialist firm of retail consultants. This specialism makes us quite different from generalist consultancies (both strategic and operational). We offer our clients a distinct expertise in our chosen sector, and to our graduate entrants we offer the opportunity to become sector experts.
Our clients come to us because we know retail – we don’t do anything else. But retail covers many sectors and many disciplines, and the scale, sophistication, and pace of change of UK retailing makes our industry one of the most exciting to work in. Our strength lies in our expertise across all retail sectors, in all channels, in all functions. This expertise gives us a deep understanding of how our clients’ businesses work, and of how to improve them. As a graduate, the understanding of consumer-facing businesses which you will rapidly develop with us will stand you in good stead for the future, whichever direction you choose to take in your career.
We are not just theorists: we deliver action-oriented practical recommendations, many of which we help to implement. Your training will reflect this – you will be working on real projects straight away as we believe that this is the best way to learn, backed up with classroom sessions in areas like financial analysis to arm you with specific skills where necessary. We also hold weekly “Javelin University” sessions, in which people from all teams present to the rest of the company in an informal setting. Topics include recent projects, updates on new developments in retailing and workshops on essential consulting skills.
All of our consultants are retail experts. Some have developed this knowledge through their consultancy career, while others have years of senior management experience as retailers in their own right in supply chain management, buying & merchandising, store operations or ecommerce. We combine these different backgrounds and skills to provide the highest quality work for our clients. You too will benefit from this breadth of experience in the people you work with on a day-to-day basis.
On our Graduate Programme we will give you responsibility from day one, offering unrivalled client contact and a programme that will equip you with the suite of skills required of a first-class retail strategy consultant. Your work with us will help shape the UK retail landscape and beyond (our non-UK work now accounts for 30% of our business). You will work on retail launches, new propositions, new store formats, new transactional web sites and innovative retail processes to help make our clients as competitive as they can be. And you will see the results of your work materialise through improved retail offers on our high streets and in our shopping centres.
You will work in a meritocratic environment, alongside people as bright and ambitious as yourself. You will be judged on the quality of your work rather than on your age or experience. Under the oversight of an experienced director, our consultants take responsibility for delivering their own work, often becoming subject matter experts within their allotted projects and presenting to the client team. Alongside this responsibility comes considerable freedom: while we encourage working from the office to benefit from the expertise of others, colleagues are given the freedom to plan their own time and there is no requirement to work long hours for the sake of it (although there will be times when extra hours are required to meet deadlines).
Our informal working environment is helped by having an open plan office. Directors and consultants sit together and nobody is hidden behind an office door, ensuring that everybody is available and approachable.
We have an active social calendar, which includes a wide variety of events. There are regular organised activities such as bowling and paintball, and we have also formed teams for various charity events. We have an annual ski trip and of course there is always a group to be found in a local pub on a Friday night.
